The Fasting of Nabi Musa & his 70 Prophets
In the 9th Juz/Para of the #Quran, there’s an interesting passage which talks about fasting; Nabi Musa Alayhis Salaam; 70 Prophets for whom he made Dua; Revelation from #Allah ﷻ and finally our Beloved Nabi ﷺ. This intriguing passage runs from verse 142 to 157 of Surah A’araaf.
In preparation for speaking to Allah ﷻ , Nabi Musa Alayhis Salaam was asked to fast for 40 days. Thereafter, Allah ﷻ spoke to him directly and He ﷻ revealed the Tawraht onto stone Tablets. These tablets were made of emerald stone and the inscription was made By Allah ﷻ through Noor – Light. (#Tafseer Imam Raazi / #Tafsir Imam Qurtubi)
Allah ﷻ then praised Nabi Musa Alayhis Salaam saying: Oh Musa certainly I have selected you over mankind by way of messengership of Me and by way speech with Me (Surah alA’araaf 144)
After some time, Nabi Musa & Haroon Alayhimas Salaam, along Shabbeer and Shabbar the sons of Nabi Haroon, were traveling together. En route, Nabi Haroon Alayhis Salaam passed away. After burying him, Nabi Musa Alayhis Salaam returned to his people along with his nephews. He gave the people the sad news. Unfortunately rumors were spread and the people accused him of having murdered Nabi Haroon Alayhis Salaam. Nabi Musa Alayhis Salaam called on his sons Shabbeer and Shabbar, who witnessed their father passing on, but the people refused to accept his innocence.
So Nabi Musa Alayhis Salaam selected 70 people from the community and asked them to fast. (Tafseer Imam Raazi) He then took these 70 people to the blessed grave of his brother, Nabi Haroon Alayhis Salaam. At the grave they asked, ‘Who has killed you, Oh Haroon?’
Nabi Haroon Alayhis Salaam replied, No one has killed me, but Allah has allowed death to come to me. (Tafseer Imam Qurtubi), meaning that he passed on due to natural causes.
SubhaanAllah, this incident with Nabi Haroon Alayhis Salaam gives us some insight into the life of the Prophets after they pass on, their ability to see out of their grave, their ability to hear and see.
The group of 70 witnessed that the rumours against Nabi Musa Alayhis Salaam were unfounded and an injustice against him. Allah ﷻ caused an earthquake and suddenly their lives were in danger. Nabi Musa Alayhis Salaam made Dua for them and Allah ﷻ granted them life and he blessed all of them with #Prophethood. (Tafseer Qurtubi)
Allah ﷻ records this in the Quran, saying, And Musa selected for Our appointed place/time, 70 men from amongst his people. Then as the earthquake seized them he said, My Lord if You wanted so, You would have destroyed them and me prior to this, would you destroy us due to the actions of insolent ones among us? (alA’raaf 155)
Nabi Musa Alayhis Salaam went on to say that this earthquake is not their destruction but it’s a test of their faith. He then prayed for a special mercy on himself and these 70 men. Allah ﷻ did grant them a special mercy: He blessed each of those 70 men with Prophethood.
This was a very critical moment in the history of the Bani Israeel. The people of Nabi Musa Alayhis Salaam had accused him of killing Nabi Haroon Alayhis Salaam. These 70 men were witnesses to his innocence. If the earthquake would have caused their deaths, then the Bani Israeel might have found it hard to believe Nabi Musa Alayhis Salaam. Allah ﷻ rescued the situation by sparing the lives of these 70 men and blessing them with Prophethood.
Nabi Musa Alayhis Salaam having just witnessed a critical moment in his Ummat’s well-being, became very concerned about his Ummat’s future. Surah alA’araaf tells us that he then made a Dua that Allah ﷻ grant him and his Ummah 3 things
1- goodness in this world
2- goodness in the hereafter
3- and Huda of Allah ﷻ
Allah ﷻ replied that He will grant it to those who have Taqwa, pay Zakaat and believe in Our Signs. (Surah alA’araaf 151)
Allah ﷻ goes further to describe exactly who they would be:
Those who would closely follow the Messenger; the Ummi Prophet … So these people would believe in him and would honour him and assist him and follow the Light (Quran) which came down with him they would be the successful prosperous ones. (Surah alA’araaf 157)
This means that the future and the success of the people lies in
– following #RasoolAllah ﷺ
– honouring him ﷺ
– assisting him ﷺ
– following the Light (theQuran)
There are many interesting lessons from these incidents with Nabi Musa Alayhis Salaam, which we can learn.
1- As a preparation for speaking with Allah ﷻ and receiving the Tawraht, Nabi Musa Alayhis Salaam had to fast first. Similarly, the 70 men, in preparing of hearing Nabi Haroon speak from the grave, and receiving the Prophethood, they had to also fast first.
However when it came to RasoolAllah ﷺ and the revelation of the Quran, he did not need to fast first. However his Ummah was asked to fast thereafter. Surah Baqarah says that Ramadhaan is the month in which the Quran was revealed … therefore fast #Ramadhaan. This means that our fasting was consequently and it is in honour of RasoolAllah ﷺ receiving the revelation.
2- The Tawraht was inscribed by Allah ﷻ on stone. However when it comes to the Quran, in Surah Hashr, Allah ﷻ informs us that had the Quran been revealed on a mountain , it would have been crushed. However the Quran was revealed on the heart of the Beloved Rasool ﷺ. This shows us that the Quran is spiritually more intense than the previous scriptures. It also teaches us that only the heart of RasoolAllah ﷺ could bear its revelation.
3- The Tawraht was incribed on a stone with Noor (Light). But when referring to the Quran, Allah ﷻ calls it a Noor (Light) which descended. This means that it is a heavenly Light.
4- The future success and prosperity of people lies in firstly believing in RasoolAllah ﷺ, then honouring and assisting him ﷺ , and following the Quran which came with him.
